Seasons in Central Nova Scotia
Nova Scotia is blessed with four spectacular seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter. Each possesses unique and special qualities in our region that offer a range of diverse experiences to enjoy.
Spring
(March – June) – Maple sugar time! The first sign of spring in Central Nova Scotia is the harvest of maple sugar. Many local communities celebrate this sweet treat by holding community maple suppers as part of an annual Maple Festival. With the weather warming up, this time of year is fantastic for exploring the many scenic waterfalls found throughout Central Nova Scotia. The falls are at their prime with additional run-off from melting snow. In the spring wildlife abounds as birds begin returning from their trip south, and white tail deer become much more visible - often found by the dozens in roadside fields. In some areas along the Bay of Fundy the site of trucks overloaded with brush is a sign of spring as fishermen begin preparing their fishing weirs for the season. And spring would not be the same without the return of vibrant color, as trees and plant life begin to bloom. Most incredible are the thousands of tulips found in the Town of Truro where an annual Tulip Festival is celebrated in May. Approximate Daytime Temperature: 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F)
Summer
(June – September) – Sunny summer is prime time for enjoying Central Nova Scotia’s great outdoors! Our warm weather of this time of year allows for a full compliment of activities and events to enjoy. Go camping, river rafting, hiking, swimming, beachcombing, sea kayaking, birding, horseback riding, golfing and explore the many unique attractions and fabulous scenery found throughout the area! Approximate Daytime Temperature: 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F)
Fall
(September – November) – With cooler temperatures comes the breathtaking beauty of our region’s fall colors. A quilt of brilliant reds, gold, oranges and greens, adorns the countryside as the leaves begin to turn. Especially beautiful are the wild blueberry fields of Central Nova Scotia as they transform to a vibrant crimson. Overhead flocks of Canada Geese can be found flying south for the winter while harvest time is celebrated in the many rural communities of the region. An afternoon drive through the country and a stop at a local farm market is a weekend tradition among many. And the challenge of a local corn maze is yet another unique attraction associated with the season. Approximate Daytime Temperature: 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F)
Winter
(December – March) – Central Nova Scotia is a winter wonderland! Located on a “snow belt,” Central Nova Scotia is gifted with an abundance of snow each year. The region has over 1320 kilometers of groomed snowmobile trails (more than anywhere else in mainland Nova Scotia), and has the largest ski hill in the Province with the most ski-able terrain in the Maritimes. Also at the hill is a huge snowboarding half-pipe, and an area for snow tubing. Other winter activities include snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, skating, shopping, a visit to a maple sugar camp, vineyard, wildlife park, or museum, or enjoy a romantic getaway to a cozy retreat. Embrace winter in Central Nova Scotia and enjoy warm hospitality during this chilly time of year. Approximate Daytime Temperature: -1°C to -10°C (30°F to 14°F)
